Mount Mercy establishes chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Mount Mercy has been accepted into the National College Athlete Honor Society as the Iowa Epsilon Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma (XAΣ), which recognizes student-athletes from accredited four-year NCAA, NAIA, USCAA or NCCAA institutions who excel in both the classroom and competition.

Chi Alpha Sigma was founded in 1996 by then DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis. His goal was to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime. Mount Mercy becomes the fifth school in Iowa to become a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, joining Iowa State University, Luther College, Loras College, and William Penn University.

In order to be inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, a student-athlete must attend a four-year accredited college or university that is a member of the NCAA, NAIA, USCAA or NCCAA. The honoree also must achieve at least junior academic standing by the fifth semester or seventh quarter, as determined by the certifying institution, and must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of a 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale).

Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Women's Administrator, Molly Altorfer and Athletic Compliance and Sports Information Coordinator, Brianna Sturtz, will serve as advisors for Mount Mercy's chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our student-athletes who excel in the classroom and on the field of play to have their achievements recognized by our campus community and their peers," says Altorfer. "As a nationally recognized academic and athletic society, our student-athletes can proudly claim their membership in Chi Alpha Sigma."

Student-athletes will be recognized as part of the Golden Horseshoes event on Monday, May 8th beginning at 5:00 pm at Hennessey Rec Center. The event will also be livestreamed to the Heart Conference Network. Graduating seniors will be presented with honors cords to be worn during Commencement on Sunday, May 14th at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse.
