Mustangs sweep Kohawks, eye weekend schedule changes

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy baseball team made its home debut on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping intra-city rival Coe by scores of 1-0 and 4-2 at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex. Weekend schedule changes have also been made in hopes of avoiding inclement weather.

Tuesday's opener against the Kohawks featured six total hits and the lone run of the game was a sacrifice fly by Sam Funke that scored Tyler Dahm in the bottom of the first inning. Joe Gabel (2-0) allowed just one hit over five innings, striking out four an walking four. Andrue Henry pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first save.

Mount Mercy (4-4) led wire-to-wire in the nightcap as well. Kaimana Souza-Paaluhi had two of the Mustangs' three hits, including an RBI double in the first and two-run triple in the second. Henry also drove in a run in the first. Kale Orman (1-0) got the win while Carter Lawler struck out two in an inning of work to get his first save of the season.

Mount Mercy's four-game series with St. Ambrose this weekend in Cedar Rapids has been moved to Friday-Saturday. The Mustangs and Bees will play two on Friday starting at 4:00 pm at the Plaster Athletic Complex, then come back Saturday for another doubleheader beginning at noon.
