Mustangs open season against Lancers

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Mount Mercy baseball team took the field for the first time over the weekend, dropping 3-of-4 games to Mount Marty in their season-opening series at Bellevue West and Westside high schools.

The Mustangs and Lancers split Friday's doubleheader, with Mount Mercy winning the opener, 12-5, before dropping game two, 4-3. Mount Marty won both games on Saturday, 5-3 and 6-4. The Mustangs (1-3) head to Florida this week for a four-game set with Webber International.

Trent Hoogerwerf, Kyle Lehmann, and Tyler Dahm led the Mount Mercy offense in Omaha. Hoogerwerf finished the weekend 4-for-9 with a home run, two doubles and three runs batted in. Lehmann was 4-for-10 with a homer, double, and four RBIs. Dahm had a team-best five hits in 13 at-bats, including a pair of doubles.

Jack Turgasen (1-0) picked up the lone win for the Mustangs, pitching four innings of shutout ball. He allowed three hits while striking out six and walking two in Friday's victory.

Mount Mercy has a single, nine-inning contest with Webber International on Friday at 5:00 pm Central Time at Brad Niethammer Field in Babson Park, Fla. The Mustangs and Warriors will play a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am CT, with the series finale -- another nine-inning game, coming on Sunday at 11:00 am.
