Mustangs Earn Series Sweep of Baker

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Mount Mercy baseball program poured in another 13 runs in the doubleheader on Saturday, earning a series sweep of Baker, taking both games 7-3 and 6-1.

Game One

Mount Mercy (17-17) saw multiple hits from Joel Vaske and Jaden Hackbarth, as Vaske was able to homer in the opener once again, his second of the series. Hackbarth drove in a game high three RBIs in the win.

Vaske, as mentioned previously, got the scoring started first with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Wildcats were able to respond in a big way, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a pair of doubles. Hackbarth drove in his first run of the day in the fifth, singling and advancing to second on an error from the Baker pitcher, as the Mustangs trimmed the deficit to 3-2.

The deficit wouldn't last long, as Kyle Moeder blasted a ball over the left field fence to give the Mustangs the lead. Hackbarth would tack on to the lead, singling to left field and driving in a pair of runs. With Hackbarth on third base, Drake Frazier drew a walk and Hackbarth scored on a passed ball.

Kyle Lehmann earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing three runs while striking out three. Trent Davidson was tabbed with the loss, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing four earned runs while striking out five.

Game Two

The Mustang pitching was dominant in game two, only allowing two Wildcats to record a hit. The Mustang bats saw hits from seven different players, with Drake Frazier recording a game high two hits, as Matthew Murphy drove in a game high two RBI's.

Baker got the scoring started first, as Peyton Sparks hit a sacrifice fly, scoring a run. The Mustangs would respond in the second as Moeder scored on a wild pitch. Murphy would single to center field in the fifth, driving in a pair as the Mustangs took a two-run lead. Vaske would come across to score on a double play in the fifth, followed by a Josh Notriano RBI on a sacrice fly. Vaske would drive in a run himself on a single to left in the sixth, giving the Mustangs the win.

Josh Fleming improved his record to 4-1, pitching four innings in relief, only allowing one hit and striking out five. Jaxon Holzem was tabbed with the loss, allowing four runs and striking out five.
