Mustangs Take Down Doane; Advance to Wednesday
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Mount Mercy baseball team was victorious on Tuesday, taking down two-seed and tournament host Doane, winning by a score of 5-3, extending the Mustangs historic season.
The only Mustang with multiple hits in the game was Ryan Knowlton, who would end his game going 3-4 at the dish while driving in a pair. The Mustangs would strike first, as Trent Hoogerwerf singled to left, driving in Tyler Dahm, as Mount Mercy took a 1-0 lead after an inning. In the second, Dahm added an RBI single of his own, scoring Knowlton. In the third, Knowlton dealt his damage, driving in a pair on a single to left, scoring Bryce Brown and Joel Vaske, as the Mustangs took a four run lead after two and a half innings.
The Tigers would respond in the third and fourth innings, scoring three to make it a one run game. The game would remain a 4-3 MMU edge until the ninth, when Vaske singled down the third base line, scoring Drake Frazier.
Matt Irvine earned the win, pitching five innings while allowing three runs and striking out three. Josh Fleming earned his second save of the year, pitching four innings of no-hit baseball while striking out six.
The Mustangs advance to take on Science & Arts (Okla.) on Wednesday morning in Lincoln in an elimination game, with the winner taking on Southeastern in the Opening Round championship.
