Mustangs Stay Hot with Sweep Over William Penn; Push Win Streak to Ten
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy (24-9, 11-1) showcased their dominance over William Penn (15-16, 5-7) in a doubleheader on Saturday, securing a 14–5 victory in the first game followed by a 6-3 win in the second.
Game One
The Mustangs' offense exploded for 14 runs, racking up 13 hits and two home runs, while their pitching staff limited William Penn to five runs over seven innings. The fireworks began in the second inning when Mount Mercy turned a four-run deficit into an 8–4 lead, starting with Lane Spieker's walk. Nick Meyer then launched a two-run homer, followed by Derek Einertson's grand slam.
In the third inning, Drew Terpins and DJ Harris opened with singles, leading to Terpins scoring on Gerwig's single. Yahirdavi Ortiz, pinch-running for Harris, scored on Einertson's sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 10–5. The Mustangs added another run in the fifth, with Ortiz doubling and scoring on a balk. In the sixth, they scored three more runs, highlighted by Meyer's RBI double and Bushnell's single, culminating in a 14–5 victory.
Einertson was a standout, driving in five runs with his grand slam. Meyer contributed three RBIs with a homer and a double, while Graves had two hits and two runs. Spieker showed versatility with two walks, a hit, and a stolen base, crossing home twice.
For William Penn, Abraham Arroyo led with two RBIs and a double, while Shane Mailloux and Keoni Young each contributed with two hits and an RBI.
Game Two
In the second game of the doubleheader, Mount Mercy clinched a 6-3 win, powered by two home runs. William Penn struck first, with Shane Mailloux hitting a two-run homer in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. Mount Mercy responded in the third, with Drew Terpins scoring on a sacrifice fly from Chase Gerwig to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Mustangs took control in the fourth inning when Lane Spieker singled and scored on Meyer's two-run homer, putting Mount Mercy ahead 3-2. The momentum continued into the fifth as Terpins hit a solo homer, followed by a triple from Einertson, setting up Kade Knock's RBI single to extend the lead to 5-2. William Penn added a run on a wild pitch in the sixth, but Mount Mercy countered with Spieker doubling and scoring on Bushnell's single, sealing the 6-3 victory.
Nick Meyer again was pivotal with a home run and two RBIs, while Lane Spieker had two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Derek Einertson added a triple and a run, and Drew Terpins contributed with two hits and a home run. For William Penn, Shane Mailloux continued to shine with a home run and two RBIs, while Ened Perez added a run and a double.
Mount Mercy's successful day improved their overall record to 24-9 and 11-1 in conference play, while William Penn fell to 15-16 and 5-7 in the conference. The Mustangs will face Grand View next in Des Moines, Iowa, with the game set for 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 11.
