Meyer's Eight RBI Day Leads Mustangs Past Grand View
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy (28-9, 15-1) faced off against Grand View (17-15, 10-10) in a thrilling doubleheader on Monday, securing a decisive 11-1 victory in the first game and edging past the Vikings 10-9 in the second.
In the first game, Mount Mercy's offense was a force to be reckoned with, racking up 12 hits and two home runs. The Mustangs took control early, with Lane Spieker singling to right field and scoring on a two-run homer by Nick Meyer in the second inning, establishing a 2-0 lead. The third inning showcased Mount Mercy's offensive power, as Derek Einertson doubled, followed by Kade Knock's single and an RBI single from Christian Graves. Meyer then hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot, bringing in Graves and Knock, while DJ Harris added an RBI double to extend the lead to 7-0.
Grand View managed to respond with a solo home run by Ben Sandvig in the fifth, making the score 7-1. However, Mount Mercy added four more runs in the sixth with Graves tripling to drive in two runs, followed by a sacrifice fly from Spieker and a run scored off a wild pitch. The game concluded with the Mustangs comfortably winning 11-1.
Meyer led the charge with a stellar performance, hitting two home runs and driving in a season-high five RBIs. Graves contributed with three RBIs and two runs scored, highlighted by a triple. Knock was effective on base, drawing two walks and scoring twice. On the mound, Cole Conner pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits and one earned run.
In the second game, the competition heated up as Mount Mercy edged out Grand View 10-9, featuring a total of five home runs from the Mustangs. Lane Spieker's two-run homer in the first inning set the pace, but Grand View quickly responded with an RBI single from Jaden Drill, ending the first inning with a score of 2-1 in favor of Mount Mercy.
The third inning saw Kade Knock kick off a four-run rally with a homer, followed by a two-run shot from Meyer and a solo blast by Sam Wiese, creating a tight 7-6 game in favor of Grand View. Mount Mercy regained the lead in the fifth with Drew Terpins' two-run homer, making it 8-7. The Mustangs then extended their lead in the sixth with an RBI single from Meyer and a groundout that scored Spieker, pushing the score to 10-7.
Grand View fought back with a homer from Thomas Maathuis and an RBI double by Colin Driscoll in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Mount Mercy held on for the 10-9 victory.
Knock scored two runs and recorded a home run, while Spieker shined with three runs and two RBIs, also hitting a home run. Meyer had a strong game with three hits and three RBIs, contributing yet another homer. Wiese rounded out the offensive highlights, scoring twice and hitting a home run.
On the Grand View side, Roderick Tanamor made a significant impact with two runs, three RBIs, and a home run. Lewnau contributed with two hits, two runs, and a home run, while Maathuis matched his efforts with a home run, scoring twice and driving in a run.
The Mustangs now stand at a record of 28-9 and maintain a strong conference record of 15-1, while Grand View holds a record of 17-15, including a 10-10 mark in conference play.
