Mustangs hold off Jaguars on Senior Day

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- After an impressive first half that included 58 points and 60 percent shooting, 18th-ranked Mount Mercy got a scare from Governors State (Ill.) before settling for a 101-89 win over the Jaguars on Senior Day at Hennessey Recreation Center.

Governors State raced out to a 14-6 lead to start the game, but the Mount Mercy outsocred the Jaguars 52-22 the rest of the half to lead, 58-36, at intermission. Governors State chipped away at its double-digit deficit and closed within five points, 89-84, with 3:39 to go.

It was still a two-possession game at 94-88 with 1:56 remaining, but the Mustangs closed the game with a 7-1 run to improve to 13-2 at home and 21-6 overall. The Jaguars fell to 6-20 on the season.

Kyle Lamaak was 11-of-13 while scoring a game-high 25 points for Mount Mercy. Four players joined him in double figures. Tre Wagner added 15 points and six assists. Ben Struss tallied 12 points and six rebounds, Derik Gogg 12 points and five boards. Chris Ford chipped in 10 points and five rebounds, Blake Murdock dished out five assists.

The Mustangs wrap up the regular season on the road. They travel to Forest City to take on Waldorf on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., then go to La Crosse, Wis., on Saturday for a 6:00 p.m. match up with Viterbo (Wis.).
