Hamzic Scores 29 in Loss to Statesmen

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Mount Mercy men's basketball team dropped a tightly contested Heart of America Conference game to William Penn, 81-74, on Wednesday evening at Hennessey Recreation Center. Despite the defeat, the game marked the season debut of Rusmir Hamzic, who led all scorers with 29 points.

The Mustangs (2-16, 1-13 Heart of America) opened the game with a strong defensive presence, holding the Statesmen (9-7, 6-6 Heart of America) to 48.2% shooting from the field. Mount Mercy capitalized on turnovers, scoring 16 points off William Penn's 16 miscues. However, struggles from beyond the arc and the free-throw line—shooting 26.7% and 40%, respectively—proved costly.

Hamzic, making his first appearance of the season, showcased his scoring prowess, going 11-for-18 from the field and 7-for-11 at the free-throw line. He added three steals, providing a spark on both ends of the court. Elijah Ward chipped in 13 points, including a key three-pointer late in the second half that helped narrow the deficit to a single possession.

Despite outscoring the Statesmen 38-30 in points in the paint, Mount Mercy was unable to overcome the combined efforts of William Penn's Isaac Hoberecht and Jacore Williams, who tallied 14 and 15 points, respectively. William Penn also held an edge in bench scoring, contributing 37 points compared to the Mustangs' 22.

The Mustangs trailed 38-31 at halftime but rallied in the second half, cutting the lead to one with five minutes remaining. Key defensive stops and timely baskets kept Mount Mercy competitive, but clutch free-throw shooting by the Statesmen sealed the game in the closing moments.

Mount Mercy will look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to play MidAmerica Nazarene, with tipoff slated for 2 p.m.
