Top six finishes for Mustangs at Mid-States Championships

WICHITA, Kan. -- In their second Tier 1 event of the season, the Mount Mercy women's bowling team was runner-up and the men's squad finished sixth at the Mid-States Championships on Oct. 15-16. Jenna Williams made the all-tournament team with a runner-up finish individually. 

In men's action, Mount Mercy put together 6,189 pins during team play and added 4,146 during Baker games for a total pinfall of 10,335. That was good for sixth in qualifying behind Wichita State (11,250), St. Ambrose (10,681), Newman (10,625), Oklahoma Christian (10,555), and Hastings (10,470). The sixth-seeded Mustangs were eliminted in the quarterfinals of match play by third-seeded Newman, 3-0 (258-185, 225-193, 277-235).

Brandon Bohn continued his hot start for the Mustangs, finishing ninth individually with 1,339 pins for a 223.2 average over six games. Then it was Brett Lloyd (1,044 pins/208.8 avg), Jonah Musial (806/201.5), Harley Shene (347/173.5), and Kai Yamada (320/160) for the Mustangs.

Wichita State topped qualifying with 9,473 pins. The Mount Mercy women were second with a total pinfall of 9,300, which included 5,608 team pins and 3,692 in Baker games. In match play, the second-seeded Mustangs fell to seventh-seeded Ottawa in the quarterfinals, 3-2 (170-139, 182-221, 194-153, 183-186, 180-153).

Over the course of six games, Williams tallied 1,233 pins for a 205.5 average. The only bowler with a better day was Juliana Botero of Wichita State, who was only four pins better (1,237/206.17 avg). Other Mustangs competing were Jaelle Hamman (1,130 pins/188.33 avg), Mackenzie Ullian (1,089/181.5), Megan Kolberg (1,067/177.32), Brynna Madison (556/185.33), Elena Carr (364/182), and Jasmine McKeel (169/169).

Mount Mercy hosts the Five Seasons Classic in two weeks, with the men's portion held at May City Bowl and the women competing at Cedar Rapids Bowling Center on Oct. 29-30.
