Yong ties for second after playoff hole in season debut
NEWTON, Kan. -- Junn Yong started off the season on a high note, tying for second place after a playoff hole. He led the Mount Mercy men's golf team to an eighth place finish in their season opener at the Mid-South Invite played at Sand Creek Station Golf Course on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Mount Mercy put together rounds of 291-295-302 for a totle of 888. Bellevue (Neb.) took home the team title at 855, (295-281-279), just five strokes ahead of host, Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 860 (284-284-292). Marian (Ind.) rounded out the top three at 868 (287-288-293).
Yong finished the tournament at 5-under-par with rounds of 68-73-70 for a score of 211. That put him in a three-way tie for first and forced a playoff to crown a champion. Benjamin Lubker from Wayland Baptist edged Yong and Hugo Ronnberg of Bellevue for the individual title.
Johan Wigertz tied for 18th (73-71-76=220), Kaleb Hagge was 30th (73-72-78=223), Dylan Tan tied for 41st (79-79-78=236) and Corbin Borelli tied for 45th (77-86-79=242). Colten Mishek competed as an individual and tied for 41st (77-77-82=236).
The Mustangs have a short turnaround as they host the Klocke Classic this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11 at Hunter's Ridge Golf Course in Marion. It's a shotgun start at noon and 9:00 am, respectfully.
