Wigertz is medalist, Mustangs are champions

SILVIS, Ill. - Johan Wigertz picked up where he left off last week and then some. He was impressive on both days of the Midwest Invitational held at TPC at Deere Run Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 26-27th, picking up his first individual crown of his career en route to leading the Mount Mercy men's golf team to the team title earlier this afternoon.

"With Johan's unbelievable 66 on day one and then the team backing it up with good performances throughout on day two- it's the most meaningful win for this program in years," stated Head Coach Ben Jones.

Round one of the tournament proved to be difficult due to 25+ mph winds and unfavorable conditions. However, Wigertz rose to the challenge and fired the low of the tournament, a 5-under par 66. He did so with two eagles and two birdies on the front nine, followed by another birdie on the 11th hole. In the final round he used five birdies to stay atop the leaderboard. Wigertz medaled at 4-under par, 138 (66-72). Junn Yong joined him in the top 10 coming in tied for fifth (75-73=148). Kaleb Hagge jumped up 15 spots to finish tied for 13th (79-73=152), Dominic McCain also moved up by 16 spots to tie for 22nd (81-75=156), and Cole Eberly tied for 37th (80-82=162) for the Mustangs.

Wigertz's notable round one put Mount Mercy in third place with a team total of 300, just four strokes behind the leader, Indiana Wesleyan. In the second round, the Mustangs improved by seven strokes for the come-from-behind team win (300-293=593). Indiana Wesleyan (296-305=601) and Marian (Ind.) (299-302=601) tied for second, Grand View was fourth (304-305=609), and Northwestern (Iowa) rounded out the top five (307-311-618).

Mount Mercy heads back to Illinois next week Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3-4 to compete in the Flyers Invitational, being played at Cog Hill #4 Dubsdread Golf Course in Lemont.
