Mustangs Place Fourth on Opening Day of Mid-South Invitational

NEWTON, Kan. - The MMU men's golf team got off to a solid start, placing fourth on the first day of the Mid-South Invitational taking place in Kansas.

Two Mustangs shot a total under par, led by Theo Baker at three-under. Baker shot an even par front nine in his first round, including a birdie on the second. He shot three-under on the back, with a birdie on the 15th followed immediately by an eagle three on the par-five 16th. Baker was the only golfer in the field to eagle the hole. This three-under round carried his momentum to also shooting even par over round two, ending his day at three-under, good for seventh place.

Junn Yong was ninth overall and second on the team, as he was right behind Baker at two-under, while also firing an even par second round. Yong would card a pair of birdies over the first four holes on the front nine, and added three more birdies on the back nine to pace his effort.

The next Mustang in was Frank Haege, who started off his front nine in the opening 18 holes with four birdies, good for two-under. Haege would also record a birdie on the back, shooting a two-over 74 through 18. Haege would stay fairly consistent over his next 18, shooting a three-over to end his day at five-over through 36 holes.

The final countable score for the Mustangs on day one came from Ziwen Zhong at six-over. Zhong carded two birdies on his first nine holes and followed that up with a birdie on his final nine. Zhong would then shoot a four-over on his next 18 holes.

The Mustangs will wrap up the Mid-South Invitational tomorrow in Newton.
