Mustangs Hold Commanding Lead After Opening Day of Mustang Fall Championship
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Three Mustangs shot in the red figures as MMU holds a commanding 14-shot lead after the opening day of the Mustang Fall Championship.
Theo Baker led all competitors on Saturday, firing a four-under round to start his weekend. Baker would birdie his first two holes and followed that up with four straight pars. Baker would then birdie the seventh and follow up with a pair of pars to end his front nine at three-under. His lone bogey on the round came on the 11th, and he would birdie two more on the back nine to end his round at four-under.
Ziwen Zhong was the second Mustang on the leaderboard, and second overall, firing a three-under opening round. Zhong would fire off an even front nine, as he was rolling with seven pars through nine holes. Zhong would birdie the 10th, 13th, and 16th on his way to a three-under 69. Junn Yong would end right behind him at two-under. Yong had two birdies on the front as well as two on the back, finishing in fourth overall.
The Mustang scores were capped off by Gannon Hall, who was the fourth Mustang in the top-15 at 13th. Hall would shoot a two-over 74 with three birdies. The final Mustang on the leaderboard was Frank Haege, ending his round in 37th at eight-over. Following an eight-over front nine, Haege would record nine straight pars on the back nine.
The Mustangs will look to earn their first tournament win of the season on Sunday in the final round of the Mustang Fall Championship at Hunters Ridge.
