Mustangs End Virginia McCoy Fall Invitational in Fifth

PARKVILLE, Mo. - The Mount Mercy men's golf team finished the Virginia McCoy Fall Invitational in fifth place on Tuesday, shooting a total team score of 593 over rounds.

The Mustangs would improve on their first round total by 21 shots, as the team had shot a 307 in the opening round. William Woods would go on to win the tournament, firing a total team score of nine-over 577, improving their second round score by 11 shots. The host team, Park University, would finish in second place by a mere eight shots, firing a 17-over score of 585. The Pirates, like the Mustangs, would improve their second round team total by 21 shots, carding a stroke count of 282 in the final round. Fellow Heart of America foe Grand View would end the tournament just one shot ahead of the Mustangs at 24-over 592, as the Vikings saw one of the larger team shot improvements on the final day of the tournament.

For the Mustangs, Junn Yong was their top finisher, coming in at two-over. Following a first round of 76, Yong would improve his second round score by eight to shoot a 68. After the final standings, Yong would rise by 14 golfers to take solo third. The next Mustang in was Ziwen Zhong, who ended his tournament at four-over, good for a two round stroke total of 146. Zhong, who shot a 74 in his first round, would shoot a 72 in the final round to end in a tie for eighth. Frederick Walker, Gannon Hall, and Theo Baker would all finish within one shot of each other, as Hall and Baker would each finish with total strokes of 155, while Walker ended with a 154.

The Mustangs will look ahead to the Heart of America Conference Preview, taking place in two weeks at Lionsgate Golf Course in Overland Park, Kansas.
