Men's Golf Places Second on Opening Day of Heart Preview
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Mustang men's golfers placed second on the opening day of the Heart of America Conference Preview, trailing the leaders of MidAmerica Nazarene by eight shots heading into the final day on Tuesday.
The clubhouse leader through 18 holes is Gavin Dines of Baker, as the Wildcats ended the day in eighth. The Pioneers of MNU placed three golfers in the top five to take the eight shot lead over the Mustangs, but all four countable Mustang scores placed in the top 15 to trail by eight.
Frederick Walker and Theo Baker each had solid rounds at three-over, as Walker would birdie three of his first four holes on the front nine. Walker would tack on two more birdies on the back to shoot an opening round 75. Baker would end his front nine at three-over after recording seven pars, and he would fire off three birdies on the back nine.
Junn Yong was just two shots back at five over, good for 12th place. Yong had a birdie on both sides of the course to shoot an opening round 77. One shot behind him to round out the countable scores was Ziwen Zhong, firing an opening round 78. Like Yong, Zhong would fire off a birdie on each side of the course.
The Mustangs hold a six shot lead over Grand View, while holding double digit shot leads over Missouri Valley and Park that round out the top five schools at the Heart Preview, which concludes on Tuesday.
