Men's Golf Places Fourth at Texas Invitational
DALLAS, Texas - The Mount Mercy men's golf team returned to the course to start off the spring season, competing in a stacked field at the Texas Invitational, hosted by Friends University at Gentle Creek Golf Course in Prosper.
Out of the 11 teams in the field, six of them were ranked in the top-25, including the Mustangs. The three teams ranked in the top-10 were the top three team finishers at the tournament, led by Oklahoma City, who won the tournament by a wide margin, ending the week at 19 under par, winning by a massive 38 shots over the next closest finisher. Host school Friends University were second, finishing at 19 over par, while Wayland Baptist would end in third place at 22 over. The Mustangs would place fourth at 24 over par, while fellow Heart opponent Grand View would round out the top five, nearly 20 shots behind the Mustangs. Oklahoma City would absolutely dominate the field in the third round, firing a team score of 15 under in the final 18 holes alone.
Frederick Walker would be the top Mustang finisher, finishing inside the top 10 at seventh place, shooting a tournament score of one under. Walker would start his tournament with a pair of rounds under par, firing off four birdies in his first round while carding a pair of birdies in round two. Walker would then shoot a two over par round in the final 18 holes, finishing at one under. The next Mustang to finish was Theo Baker at 13th, finishing at seven over. Baker's best round would come in the final 18 holes, shooting even par, carding four birdies.
Yong Junn would finish inside the top 20 at 17th, with a score of nine over. Junn would fire a pair of rounds of one over, including three birdies during round one. The second round was friendly to the Mustangs, as a pair of golfers would card eagles. Gannon Hall would card an eagle on the 541 par five sixth, while Junn would card an eagle on the 570 yard par five 13th.
The Mustangs will return to the course at the Verhille Invitational, taking place in Camdenton, Missouri at the Old Kinderhook Golf Course.
