Mustangs Place Fifth at Mustang Derby in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Mount Mercy men's golf team placed fifth at the Mustang Derby, hosted by Morningside University in Sioux City.

Host school Morningside captured the team title, finishing at eight over par as a team, shooting two rounds of 292, good for a total team score of 584. Iowa Western took home second at 18 over par, shooting rounds of 300 and 294. Northeast CC and DMACC rounded out the top four, with scores of 606 and 607 respectively. The Mustangs would finish just outside the top four, with rounds of 301 and 309, good for a 610.

On the individual side, Frederick Walker paced the Mustangs with a solo fifth place finish, ending his tournament at three over par. Walker would fire off an even par 72 in round one before shooting a three over 75 in round two. Walker would only trail three Morningside golfers, along with William Welsh from Iowa Western, who would capture the individual crown at one under par.

The other Mustang golfer to place inside the top 10 was Frank Haege, who would finish in a tie for eighth at five over. Haege would shoot a one over 73 in round one, before carding a four over 76 in the final round. Caleb Kirk would add his name to the top 25, ending in a tie for 22nd. Kirk would finish at 10 over par, improving his shot total from round one to round two, shooting a three over 75 in the tournament's final round.

The Mustangs will take the next two weeks off before returning to the course for the final tournament of the fall season, as they take on the Heart Conference Preview, taking place at Paradise Pointe in Smithville, Missouri.
