Kastl, Passanha spark Mustangs
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- After a tough overtime loss to St. Francis (Ill.) in their season opener a week ago, the Mount Mercy men's soccer team redeemed themselves with a 4-0 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) in a non-conference match on Wednesday at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.
Kevin Kastl (SR/Schwabach, Germany) had a hand in three of the Mustangs' four goals, scoring two himself while assisting another. He gave his team a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute with an unassisted score, then set up the first of two Rafael Passanha (SO/Lisbon, Portugal) goals eight minutes later. Kastl found the back of the net again in the 70th minute before Jonathan Scoles assisted another Passanha score in the 76th minute to close the scoring.
The clean sheet by Matias da Fonseca (SO/Lisbon, Portugal) included five saves. Mount Mercy held a 17-7 advantage in shots and put 11 shots on-goal compared to only five for the Trojans (1-1-0). Up next for the Mustangs (1-1-0) will be another non-conference contest against Roosevelt (Ill.) on Saturday at IIT Park in Chicago. Kickoff is 3:00 p.m. Mount Mercy is back at home against St. Ambrose on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 7:00 p.m. at the Plaster Athletic Complex.
