Kastl nets three goals in Mustang rout
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Kevin Kastl (SR/Schwabach, Germany)'s three goals were part of a dominant performance by the Mount Mercy men's soccer team in a 4-0 shutout of St. Ambrose in a non-conference match on Wednesday night at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.
The victory came four days after the Mustangs were held scoreless by Roosevelt (Ill.) in a 2-0 loss in Chicago. On Wednesday, it was Mount Mercy that dominated the stat sheet, outshooting St. Ambrose (1-2-0) 24-6 overall while putting 12 on frame. The Mustangs (2-2-0) host Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the Plaster Athletic Complex.
It appeared as though Wednesday's match would be scoreless at halftime until Jose Leite (FR) headed in a corner kick by Jonathan Scholes (SR/Southport, England) to get Mount Mercy on the board in the 45th minute. The Mustangs out-shot the Fighting Bees, 12-0, in the opening period, and then turned things over to Kastl after the break.
He drilled goals in the 52nd and 63rd minutes on assists by Rafael Passanha (SO/Lisbon, Portugal) and added an unassisted goal in the 83rd minute to finish the scoring. Kastl has a team-high five goals and a pair of assists in four matches this season.
