Mustangs dominate Tigers
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy men's soccer team dominated from start to finish on Saturday, erupting for six goals in the second half in a 9-1 rout of Iowa Wesleyan at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.
The Mustangs snuck past the Tigers in last season's matchup, edging Iowa Wesleyan, 2-1, in Cedar Rapids. This time around they left no doubt, putting up their highest scoring total since a 9-0 shutout of Viterbo last fall.
First half goals came from Nikola Petrovic (SR/Belgrade, Serbia) (14') and Kevin Kastl (SR/Schwabach, Germany) (27' 38'). For Kastl, it was his fifth score of the week. He drilled three goals in Mount Mercy's 4-1 win over St. Ambrose on Wednesday and now has a team-best seven this season.
After Cesar Arroyo got the Tigers in the board in the 52nd minute, the wheels came off for Iowa Wesleyan. A pair of goals by Jonathan Scholes (SR/Southport, England) (57') less than a minute apart started the avalanche for Mount Mercy. Diego Lopez (FR) added a score in the 69th minute before Nolan Armstrong (SR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) produced a hat trick in the last seven minutes alone (83' 88' 89').
A final non-conference match is slated for Saturday, Sept. 14, at 3:30 p.m. at Waldorf. Then it's Heart of America Athletic Conference action the rest of the way, beginning with a home matchup with Clarke on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Plaster Athletic Complex.
