Mustangs wrap up non-conference schedule with draw

FOREST CITY, Iowa -- Mount Mercy got a second-half goal from Duarte Leite (SO/Santarem, Portugal) that leveled the match and helped the Mustangs to a 1-1 draw with Waldorf in Saturday's non-conference finale.

The Warriors and Mustangs nearly played a scoreless first half, but Waldorf drew first blood in the 43rd minute to lead, 1-0, at the break. Mount Mercy tied things up in the 67th minute when Kevin Kastl (SR/Schwabach, Germany) took a free kick from 30 yards out and Leite headed the ball into the net.

In extra time, the Mustangs tallied eight more shots but couldn't notch the game-winner. Matias da Fonseca (SO/Lisbon, Portugal) stopped a pair of shots and Dane Lee (SR/Clarendon, Jamaica) had a save for Mount Mercy, which will take a 3-2-1 record into Tuesday's Heart of America Athletic Conference opener against Clarke. The Mustangs host the Pride (2-3-0) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.
