Mustangs trail early, win late at Evangel
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Mount Mercy men's soccer team rebounded from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat Evangel (Mo.), 2-1, in Saturday's Heart of America Athletic Conference match at Coryell Field.
Despite 19 total shots in the opening period, the Mustangs trailed at the break after a goal by Nick Wagner in the 23rd minute. Seven minutes into the second half, however, Rafael Passanha (SO/Lisbon, Portugal) leveled the match with an assist from Kevin Kastl (SR/Schwabach, Germany). Nearly 28 minutes later, Oguzhan Bozkan (SO/Nuremberg, Germany) provided the unassisted game-winner as Mount Mercy won its second-straight in league play.
Dane Lee (SR/Clarendon, Jamaica) stopped five shots for the Mustangs (5-2-1, 2-0-0 Heart), who travel to Canton, Mo., on Wednesday for another Heart matchup with Culver-Stockton (Mo.) (2-7-0, 0-2-0 Heart) at 7:30 p.m. Mount Mercy will be back at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex to host defending NAIA national champion Central Methodist (Mo.) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles (8-1-0, 2-0-0 Heart0 come in ranked third in the nation.
