Opportunistic Pioneers shut down Mustangs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Total shots were identical, but MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) made more of their opportunities and shutout Mount Mercy, 4-0, in Saturday's Heart of America Athletic Conference men's soccer match at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.

It didn't take long for the Pioneers to get on the board as Jayedon Manswell found the back of the net in the sixth minute. After the Mustangs couldn't take advantage of scoring opportunities, back-to-back goals by Nicolas Theberge and Mathieu Ecourtemer in the 21st and 23rd minutes deflated Mount Mercy's hopes of winning the critical league match.

Felipe Hideki added a score in the 52nd minute to finish things off. Both teams finished with 13 total shots, with MidAmerica Nazarene (6-7-2, 4-3-2 Heart) putting seven on-frame compared to four by Mount Mercy (7-6-2, 4-4-1 Heart). The Mustangs close out their home slate next Saturday, Oct. 26, against 17th-ranked Baker (Kan.) on Senior Day at 3:30 p.m. at the Plaster Athletic Complex.
