League-leading Eagles slip past Mustangs

FAYETTE, Mo. -- Two-time defending NAIA national champion Central Methodist got all they could handle from Mount Mercy on Sunday and needed a late score to defeat the Mustangs, 2-1, in a Heart of America Athletic Conference men's soccer match at Davis Field.

Mount Mercy (3-6-2, 3-5-2 Heart) struck first with Itsuki Ishihara (JR/Hyogo, Japan)'s goal in the 26th minute on an assist by Jordan Webb (JR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa). It remained 1-0 at the half, but two minutes into the second period Carlos Scheckermann leveled the match for Central Methodist (12-0-0, 12-0-0 Heart). Then just five minutes from full time, Tom Irion netted the game-winner to keep the Eagles undefeated.

The Mustangs wrap up the fall portion of their schedule this week, hosting Culver-Stockton (1-10-0, 1-9-0 Heart) on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at Hadzic Field in Cedar Rapids.
