Mustangs grind out win over Pride

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Itsuki Ishihara connected with leading goal scorer Yu Sasaki with just over four minutes to go in the second overtime as Mount Mercy edged Clarke in Tuesday night's Heart of America Athletic Conference men's soccer match at Hadzic Field.

Sasaki headed in a cross by Ishihara to break a scoreless tie and send the Mustangs to their first overtime victory this season. Mount Mercy's leading scorer now has 11 goals in 10 games as the Mustangs improved to 5-5-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the Heart. Clarke suffered their first conference defeat and dipped to 5-4-1 and 2-1-1 in the league.

An evenly played match saw Mount Mercy fire off 21 shots, putting seven on goal. Clarke tallied 13 shots with three on target. Joao Pedro Oliveira stopped all three by the Pride while Fernando Contreras had six saves against the Mustangs.

Mount Mercy's next three matches are all on Saturdays, beginning with a trip to Parkville, Mo., to face Park (3-2-1, 2-2-1 Heart) on Oct. 2 at 2:30 pm.
