Late volley hits crossbar as Mustangs, Kohawks draw

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A late volley by Robin Neumann, one of three point blank scoring attempts by Mount Mercy in the final minute, glanced off the crossbar as the Mustangs' season opener ended in a 1-1 draw with Coe at Hadzic Field at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.

Ivano Carrieri put the Mustangs on top, 1-0, on a penalty kick in the 68th minute and it stayed that way for nearly 20 minutes until Sam Sanchez leveled the match near the end of full time. Mount Mercy put a pair of shots on frame off a corner kick with about 40 seconds remaining, then Neumann's final attempt richocheted off the crossbar with less than 10 seconds to go.

Total shots were 17-3 in favor of the Mustangs, who finished with 10 shots on goal. The Kohawks tallied three shots in the match and one on-frame, which was the Sanchez score in the 87th minute. Mount Mercy (0-0-1) hosts Waldorf in another non-conference game on Saturday at 7:30 pm at Hadzic Field.
