CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- For a while it looked similar to their game with Coe earlier in the week when Mount Mercy took the lead and saw their opponent level the match on the way to a draw. The Mustangs weren't having it on Saturday though, answering a Waldorf goal with two scores of their own in a five-minute span to defeat the Warriors, 3-1, at Hadzic Field.
Mount Mercy dominated offensively, totaling 24 shots with eight on-frame. It was Keita Karasawa who began the scoring, finding the back of the net on an assist by Danilo Obradovic in the 30th minute. The Mustangs led, 1-0, at intermission but then, just six minutes into the second half, turned the ball over in the Waldorf half which led directly to the equalizer by Nickolas Linares.
Unfazed, Mount Mercy surged ahead for good when Robin Sarret set up Antonio Cuellar's go-ahead goal in the 60th minute. Five minutes later, Cuellar to Ricardo Abrantes (65') provided some insurance for the final 25 minutes as the Mustangs cruised to their first win of the season.
A scrimmage with Dubuque is on Tuesday's slate at Hadzic Field, then Mount Mercy (1-0-1) hosts another non-conference match with Roosevelt on Sept. 2 at 2:00 pm.
