CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - In a hard-fought, tightly contested matchup, a first half game-winner lifted the Mustangs past St. Ambrose, defeating the Bees by a score of 2-1.
Martin Fernandez opened the scoring in the 12th minute, scoring on a penalty kick to make it 1-0 Mustangs. Sam Flello added a goal of his own after the ball bounced around a crowded box following a corner kick, tapping the ball in an empty net to tie the game at one. On a free kick, Matteo Anzallo shot the ball on net, and following a couple bounces around the box, found it's way in the net to give the Mustangs a lead, which would hold to be the final.
Although Alejandro Cuende only recorded one save, that save proved to be crucial in the Mustangs win, as Cuende batted a ball out of play following a great shot attempt from St. Ambrose. At the time, the game was still scoreless, but the save ended up helping the Mustangs earn another three points for the win on the season.
The Mustangs will open Heart of America conference play with a trip to Missouri to take on Missouri Valley. The conference home opener will take place next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against Grand View.
