Mustangs Remain Unbeaten With a Draw Against Viterbo
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy men's soccer settled for a 1-1 draw against Viterbo on Wednesday at Hadzic Field, with both goals coming inside the opening seven minutes of play.
Viterbo struck first in the fifth minute when forward Jokubas Jancauskas finished inside the box off a service from Alvaro Paquete Oliveira. The Mustangs responded less than 90 seconds later. Pablo Ortega Herreros netted the equalizer in the sixth minute, converting a pass from defender Lucas Olivera. The goal marked Ortega Herreros' fourth of the season.
Despite the early scoring, both defenses tightened for the remainder of the contest. Mount Mercy managed just four shots, placing one on frame, while Viterbo generated 10 attempts with seven on target. Mustang goalkeeper Zach Biggs was pivotal in keeping the match level, recording six saves across 90 minutes.
The Mustangs struggled to maintain possession in the attacking third, earning only one corner kick compared to Viterbo's three. Midfield substitutions throughout the first half provided fresh legs, but Mount Mercy was limited to long-range efforts and could not generate sustained pressure against Viterbo goalkeeper Konstantin Tskhadadze, who was not forced to make a save.
The second half featured physical play and limited scoring chances. Mount Mercy recorded just one shot attempt after halftime, a header from Ortega Herreros in the 69th minute that sailed wide. The match featured 26 combined fouls and seven yellow cards. Hunter Wilson and Quintino Saggiorato each picked up cautions for Mount Mercy during the closing stretch.
Viterbo nearly regained the lead late, but Biggs denied multiple on-target attempts, including stops in the 46th, 52nd, 55th and 81st minutes. His performance preserved the Mustangs' unbeaten record, now 2-0-1 on the season.
The Mustangs return to the pitch on Saturday, travelling to Davenport to take on St. Ambrose.
