Miller wins weight throw title, men finish runner-up at Heart indoor championships
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Six Mustangs hit NAIA automatic qualifying marks, including weight throw champion Mitch Miller, as the Mount Mercy men finished runner-up at the 2023 Heart of America Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at Hughes Fieldhouse this weekend.
Miller, already a national qualifier in the weight throw, hit the NAIA's automatic qualifying standard while winning the event with a toss of 17.20 meters. That's the top distance in the Heart this season and ranks 21st in the nation.
Sprinters Ceondae Adams, Keegan Thompson, and Breon Wade also notched automatic qualifying marks. Adams did so in a pair of events, the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. He ran the 60-meter dash in :06.86 in the prelims, then finished eighth in the finals in :07.03. Again in the 60-meter hurdles, Adams went :08.18 in the prelims and placed second in the finals in :08.25.
Thompson ran the third-fastest time in the Heart this season in the 60-meter dash to finish second in the event in :06.85. That eclipsed the NAIA automatic qualifying mark as well. Wade tied Adams with the second-fastest time in the prelims (:06.86), then finished in :06.88 in the finals, good for third place.
Luke Nickelson tied his season-best in the triple jump in a runner-up finish. His leap of 14.31 meters was an automatic qualifying mark and ranks second in the Heart and 28th in the NAIA.
Grand View won their fourth straight indoor team championship with 163.5 points. Mount Mercy was second with 106.5, followed by Benedictine (104), MidAmerica Nazarene (99), Central Methodist (85.5), William Penn (75), Clarke (43), Missouri Valley (36), Graceland (30), Baker (29), Evangel (21.5), Park (17), and Culver-Stockton (9).
