Mustangs count four qualifiers at indoor opener

GRINNELL, Iowa -- Mount Mercy's Ceondae Adams, Luke Nickelson, Mitch Miller, and Caleb Rutherford qualified for the NAIA indoor national meet with performances at the season-opening Grinnell Opener on Friday.

Adams qualified for nationals in the 60-meter hurdles for the third time. He recorded a personal best and hit the NAIA's automatic qualifying mark with a time of :08.17. That was good for second place.

Nickelson is also no stranger to the national stage, having earned all-America status in the triple jump in 2020. At Grinnell, he reached the NAIA's "B" standard in the event with a leap of 14.15 meters. Nickelson also won the long jump (6.50m).

Miller nailed the automatic qualifying mark in the weight throw with a personal-best distance of 17.60 meters. That was good for second place at Grinnell and earned him a spot at nationals for the third time. Miller also finished fourth in the shot put (13.77m).

Rutherford recorded a PR while winning the shot put on Friday night. His toss of 15.85 meters also reached the NAIA's automatic qualifying distance. Rutherford was also third in the weight throw (15.71m).

Other event winners for the Mustang men were Keegan Thompson (60m/:06.97), Ryan Clancy (mile run/4:26.06), the 4x200 meter relay team (Adams, Jordan Schroeder, Breon Wade, Thompson/1:30.42), and Ky Kaufmann (pole vault/2.75m).
