Championship Week has arrived for indoor track & field

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Championship Week has arrived for Mount Mercy as the Mustangs prepare for the 2024 Heart of America Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Hughes Fieldhouse on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo.

The Mustangs have four individuals and a pair of relays ranked first in the Heart heading into the weekend championships. J'Lyn Knutson has the top time in the conference in the mile run (5:16.05) and the 3,000 meters (10:20.22). Ryan Clancy has the fastest finish in the 5,000 meters (15:07.14), while Luke Nickelson (14.39m) and Mitch Miller (17.83m) have the top distances in the triple jump and weight throw.

A total of 12 teams will compete at the indoor championships, including Baker, Benedictine, Central Methodist, Clarke, Culver-Stockton, Graceland, Grand View, MidAmerica Nazarene, Missouri Valley, Mount Mercy, Park, and William Penn. Central Methodist enters as the two-time defending Heart of America women's indoor track & field champion, while Grand View has captured the last four men's indoor titles.

The top three finishers in each event are considered all-conference athletes, while fourth, fifth, and sixth place finishers in each event are considered honorable mention all-conference. Several awards are also determined at the championships and will be announced on Monday, including men's and women's coaches of the year, assistant coaches of the year, men's and women's track athletes of the meet, men's and women's field athletes of the meet.
