Rutherford, Nail power Mustangs at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- Caleb Rutherford and Bre Nail hit automatic qualifying marks and Mount Mercy counted 13 individual champions at the Cornell Invitational on Friday.

Rutherford and Nail each had a season-best and now lead the Heart of America Athletic Conference in the men's and women's shot put. Rutherford, whose distance was 15.94 meters, and Nail, who threw 13.79 meters, hit automatic qualfying marks for the NAIA national meet next month.

Seven more event titles led the Mustang men to the team title on Friday. In addition to Rutherford, individual champions were Keegan Thompson in the 100-meter dash and 400-meter dash, Sergio Lizarraga in the 5,000 meters, Brayden Kolosick in the 400-meter hurdles, Ky Kaufmann in the pole vault, and Kaden Schilling in the discus and hammer.

The Mount Mercy women were runner-up at Cornell and counted four event titles in addition to the performance by Nail. Other champs were Carli Reittinger in the 400 meters, Brooklyn Johnson in the long jump, Grace Kelley in the discus, and Cristina Villalobos in the hammer.
