Eight Mustangs to compete at outdoor championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- It's championship week for the eight Mustangs that will compete at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Indiana Wesleyan at the Wildcat Track & Field Complex in Marion, Ind.

Abby Hill and Keegan Thompson will each compete in two events this week. Hill, the Heart of America Athletic Conference champ in the javelin, is seeded 21st and will compete in the event on Wednesday at 6:00 pm Central Time. She also qualified in the 5,000 meter race walk where she is seeded 16th, which will be contested on Thursday at 3:25 pm.

Thompson took home Heart of America titles in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash and will compete in both at the national championships. He enters the NAIA national meet ranked 26th in the 100 and 12th in the 200. Prelims of the 200 are Wednesday at 4:25 pm with finals on Friday at 3:20. Thompson races in the 100 prelims on Thursday at 2:40 pm with finals scheduled on Friday at 2:00 pm.

Nail, a two-time NAIA all-American in the shot put, including at last year's outdoor championships, will attempt to do it again this spring. She comes in ranked eighth in the NAIA in the event after winning the Heart of America shot put title earlier this month.

Mount Mercy has two competitors in a pair of men's field events. Kaden Schilling and Mitch Miller are head into nationals ranked 17th and 20th in the hammer, respectively. Schilling was the Heart of America outdoor champion in the event this season. The men's hammer throw starts at 10:30 am on Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday at 2:30 pm, Ollie Wear and Morgan Batten will compete in the javelin. Wear comes in ranked 17th in the event, Batten 21st.

Heart of America shot put champion Caleb Rutherford, who competed at the NAIA indoor championships in March, will also throw at the outdoor meet on Friday at 2:00 pm. He is seeded 20th heading into the outdoor national meet.
