Mustangs Earn Top Finishes to Open Home Meet
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Mount Mercy men's outdoor track and field team opened Day 1 of the Mustang Distance Carnival and Open with a strong slate of performances Friday.
In the distance events, Brady Cortez led the Mustangs in the 1,500-meter invite, placing third with a time of 4:04.47. Dylan Bledsoe (4:08.33) and Jonathan Williams (4:09.33) followed with sixth- and seventh-place finishes, respectively. In the 5,000-meter open, Trey Schulte secured a fifth-place finish, clocking in at 16:03.34.
In the 5,000-meter invite, Ryan Mitchell paced Mount Mercy with a fourth-place time of 15:09.59. Quinn Swift finished seventh in 15:18.00, followed by Lukas Lamparek in ninth at 15:21.83.
The Mustangs also earned a runner-up finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Keegan Thompson, Ceondae Adams, Nate Keiper, and Noah Valenzuela posted a time of 3:15.48, surpassing the "B" standard mark to qualify for nationals.
In field events, Keiper took second in the javelin throw with a mark of 49.67 meters. Owen McBride placed third with a throw of 46.96 meters. Nate Jones led Mount Mercy in the men's shot put open, placing second at 13.54 meters, with Alex Paulson following in fourth (12.23 meters). In the shot put elite division, Omar Salinas earned eighth place with a throw of 14.22 meters.
Oscar Nielsen rounded out the Mustangs' field efforts with a ninth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.80 meters.
Mount Mercy returns for Day 2 of the Mustang Distance Carnival and Open on Saturday, with events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
