OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- Despite 27 kills from Akeel Oxley, the 10th-ranked Mount Mercy men's volleyball team dropped a four-set, Heart of America Athletic Conference match at seventh-ranked William Penn on Tuesday night.
The Mustangs and Statesmen split the first two sets, each winning 25-19. William Penn won set three, 25-18, and closed out the match with a 28-26 victory in set number four. The win also gave the Statesmen (15-3, 8-2 Heart) a season sweep of the Mustangs (17-5, 5-5 Heart).
Oxley hit .296 for the night with a season-high 27 kills. That's the third-highest total in school history and five kills shy of his own school record set last season against Missouri Baptist. Colin Castelnau added nine kills and a team-high 11 digs. Rafael Vieyra tallied 43 assists while Bo Brainerd five kills and five blocks.
The Mustangs are back at home this weekend, hosting third-ranked Park on Friday at 7:00 pm before a triangular with Graceland and Morningside on Saturday beginning at noon at Hennessey Recreation Center.
