Mustangs drop four-set match in season finale

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Ninth-seeded Mount Mercy wrapped up its first trip to the NAIA Men's Volleyball Championship on Wednesday night in pool play, falling in four sets to eighth-seeded Jamestown, 25-19, 20-25, 25-14, 25-13, at Alliant Energy PowerHouse.

Despite losing set one, the Mustangs (24-10) had a strong opening set, totaling 12 kills while hitting .219. They bounced back to win set two with 14 kills and a .286 attack percentage and it looked like the two teams were settling in for a long night. But the Jimmies (22-1) dominated sets three and four to close out the match and Mount Mercy's season.

Colin Castelnau drilled a team-high 13 kills to go with seven digs. Akeel Oxley added 10 kills, Alessandro Spendolini six, and Bo Brainerd and Raphael Massara four each. Rafael Vieyra, Mount Mercy's career assist leader, closed out his career with 33 against Jamestown. Johann Schopsdau recorded a team-best eight digs, Massara finished with four blocks.

Caydann and Caylor Cox were the offensive leaders for the Jimmies, tallying 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Setters Gaven Hackley and Gabriel Ocasio had 14 and 10 assists. Caylor Cox ended up with digs, Tysen Myers managed eight total blocks.
