Mount Mercy Rolls Past Morningside in Straight Sets
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Mount Mercy's men's volleyball team added another win to its record with a dominant sweep of the Morningside Mustangs. Mount Mercy won in three sets with scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-18.
Morningside put up a strong fight in the opening serves, keeping the score within one point until Mount Mercy's Richard Struska served five straight points to extend the lead. Taking advantage of key Morningside service errors, Mount Mercy claimed the first set, 25-17, while hitting .250 as a team.
The second set mirrored the first, as Mount Mercy recorded a match-high .250 hitting percentage with 16 kills to take a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs were unable to recover in the third, with Mount Mercy sealing the sweep with a 25-18 win while holding Morningside to a -.111 hitting percentage and just six kills.
Matthew Krzos led Mount Mercy's offensive attack, recording a .462 hitting percentage and seven kills. Pere Font Torres also finished with seven kills on 17 attempts for a .118 attack percentage and added six digs. Gabor Toth and Brian Lynch each tallied six kills. Gustavo Bauer paced the offense with 28 assists, while Struska anchored the defense with 16 digs.
Morningside was led by Natan Alves, who had seven kills and hit .200, while Donte Jennings and Mohamed Benkrid contributed three kills apiece.
Mount Mercy (18-4, 12-3 HEART) returns to action on Saturday, March 29, hosting Dordt at Hennessey Recreation Center at 1:00 p.m.
