Mustangs Claim Commanding Win Against Defenders
DeWITT, Iowa — Mount Mercy University Mustangs (19-2, 14-2) clinched a commanding 3-0 victory over Dordt University (21-8, 11-6) on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs showcased their prowess with a .299 hitting percentage, surpassing the Defenders' .224 in this straight-set triumph.
In the opening set, Mount Mercy displayed a balanced attack, matching Dordt point for point in the early stages. Gabor Toth made a significant impact with a decisive kill, expertly set up by Gustavo Kehl Bauer, keeping the game in balance. As the set progressed, the Mustangs capitalized on a series of Dordt errors and executed critical blocks, notably from Curdin Acklin and Matthew Krzos, which enabled them to edge ahead.
A nail-biting moment ensued with a 24-all tie, but Toth delivered a clutch kill to clinch the set for Mount Mercy, 26-24, setting a strong foundation for the following sets.
Mount Mercy kept their momentum going in the second set, surging past the Defenders with a powerful finish. Despite numerous lead changes, the Mustangs gained steam with pivotal plays from Acklin and Guglielmo Illotti, consistently set up by Kehl Bauer. Raphael Massara's timely service aces allowed Mount Mercy to extend their advantage late in the set, maintaining pressure on Dordt.
The Mustangs overcame several errors, keeping their composure even after Dordt called a timeout at 22-20. Acklin's kill post-timeout sealed the 25-22 set victory for Mount Mercy.
The third set saw Mount Mercy burst out of the gate with a 2-0 lead thanks to a Toth kill and a block by Illotti and Toth. Although the lead changed hands several times, the Mustangs retained their edge with key contributions from Illotti and Toth, both delivering crucial kills. Kehl Bauer facilitated numerous scoring opportunities, including a pivotal service ace by Richard Struska, reclaiming the lead at 14-13.
In the set's latter stages, Mount Mercy capitalized on Dordt's errors, notably with a critical block by Kehl Bauer and Massara that evened the score at 19-19. Following a Dordt timeout, the Mustangs charged ahead, with Illotti and Kehl Bauer spearheading the final surge. Mount Mercy wrapped up the set 25-23, sealing the match victory.
Illotti led the Mustangs with 14 kills on 29 attempts, amassing 15.5 points. Kehl Bauer orchestrated the offense with 34 assists, adding five digs and two total blocks. Acklin contributed 11 kills on 29 attempts, totaling 11.5 points. Toth notched 10 kills and three total blocks, rounding out his performance with 12.5 points.
Joel Van Groningen stood out for Dordt with 15 kills on 31 attempts, achieving a .323 hitting percentage and contributing 18.5 points. Justin Hofman was flawless, sporting a 1.000 hitting percentage with 17 assists. Kai Chapman bolstered the team's offense with three kills on nine attempts, earning 3.5 points.
Cory Kuperus was effective with three kills and two total blocks, accumulating 4.5 points. Cade Schmidt made a significant impact with eight kills, a service ace, and nine total points.
Next up for the Mustangs is a home contest against Culver-Stockton College, scheduled for Friday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
