Witzany wraps up career with all-American honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Jayna Witzany put together a stellar final season at Mount Mercy, capping it off with a NAIA first-team all-American selection. She becomes only the second Mustang in program history to earn all-American honors twice in their career, joining Kim Hutchins from 1990 and 1991.

Witzany finished with a 22-8 record to go along with six saves, a new single-season record at Mount Mercy. In 218 innings of work, she amassed the 300 strikeout threshold for the third season in a row, besting her previous record by over 20. Her 328 strikeouts this year are second in the NAIA. Witzany is also one of only six pitchers to finish with an earned run average below 1.00. Her 0.93 ERA is fifth best in the nation. She averaged 10.53 strikeouts per seven innings, giving up only 36 runs on the year, 29 of which were earned.

In her fifth year, Witzany continued her dominance, being selected as the Heart of America Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season. She also became just the eighth player in the history of the NAIA to reach 1,000 career strikeouts. She holds numerous school records: strikeouts (1,077), wins (85), and shutouts (40) among many more. She also set a new single-season record for strikeouts with 328.
