Mustangs get weekend sweep of Statesmen, Wildcats

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy softball team averaged nearly 10 runs per game as they swept Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheaders with William Penn and Culver-Stockton this weekend.

A two-run homer by Keily Ulatowski in the top of the sixth inning gave the Mustangs a 5-4 win over the Statesmen in Friday's opener. Ulatowski finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted and Allie Poston also drove in a pair of runs. Megan Steffans nabbed the win with 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

A six-run first inning and seven-run fourth powered Mount Mercy to a six-inning, 16-7 victory in game two. The Mustangs totaled 14 hits, with four players recording multi-hit games. Calli Janik was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Ashley Smith went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Poston finished 2-for-3 while driving in a run. Rylee Goodfellow was 2-for-4 and Sarah Heick doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

Kalli Minger (5-8) held Culver-Stockton hitless through three innings as Mount Mercy routed the Wildcats, 13-1, in five innings in Saturday's home opener. Minger went the distance, allowing just two hits and an earned run while striking out three. The Mustangs led, 5-1, going to the bottom of the fourth when they tagged Culver-Stockton pitchers for eight runs.

Ulatowski did damage at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four runs batted in. Raquel Trolliet was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Ashley Smith went 2-for-3 while Annika Headington and Abbey Smith drove in two runs apiece.

Mount Mercy (14-14, 4-4 Heart) needed a comeback to win game two, 4-2. After the Wildcats (10-22, 1-7 Heart) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third, the cut the deficit in half thanks to an RBI single by Janik that scored Ashley Smith. Then in the sixth, Heick had a run-scoring single to tie the game and the Mustangs took the lead with an unearned run on a fielder's choice. They got an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Poston that plated Sam Lee.

Alyssa McElvain (8-6) threw a complete-game five-hitter. She struck out two and walked one while giving up a pair of earned runs. Ashley Smith, Janik, and Headington each had two of Mount Mercy's nine hits.

Mount Mercy is at Clarke for a Heart doubleheader on Wednesday at 4:00 pm at Veterans Memorial Park in Dubuque, then the Mustangs come home to host Benedictine and Baker next weekend. First pitch is 1:00 pm Saturday and noon on Sunday at Busse Field.
