Mustangs Sweep Judson to Open Home Schedule
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - In an early week addition to the schedule, the Mustangs took down the Eagles of Judson in a doubleheader, taking the first game, 5-3, before winning the nightcap, 8-6.
Game One
The Mustangs saw Mia Petersen and Maddie Caylor each record two hits, while Lilly Wuethrich would lead the group in RBIs, recording two.
Judson would add two runs in the first inning, as Allie Arwood drove in a run on a fielders choice, while Taty Chaves drove in a run on a groundout, as the Eagles jumped out to a quick lead. The lead wouldn't last long, as Wuethrich drove in her two runs in the game on an a triple to right field, driving in Sarah Heick and Mia Petersen. The Mustangs would add two more in the fourth, as Ashley Webb drove in one on a single to second base, while another run would come across to score on a throwing error.
Judson would get a run back as Maddie Petty singled to right, scoring one, but Abbey Smith recorded a triple to center field, driving in Kendra Mescher as the lead for the Mustangs grew to two, which would hold to be the final.
Maggie McNally earned the win, improving her record to 3-1, pitching five innings and allowing three runs. Webb would go on to earn the save, pitching two innings in relief and not allowing a hit. Katherine Hrinda was tabbed with the loss, pitching six innings for the Eagles while allowing 10 hits and five runs.
Game Two
Sarah Heick would continue her impressive stretch as of late, leading the team in both hits and RBIs with three each. Petersen would join Heick as the two Mustangs to record multiple hits, as Petersen would tack on two hits of her own.
Braly Wiser drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice bunt, scoring Cynthia Alvillar. Following a few walks, Alyssa McElvain drew a walk of her own and drove in a run, giving the Mustangs the lead following a run a wild pitch. Following Alvillar's two-RBI single to right center, Heick would match it with a two-RBI triple of her own in the second, scoring Petersen and Ashley Smith.
In the fifth, Heick would drive in another run on a double to left center, and Wuethrich would follow that up with a two-run bomb that would hit the top of the outfield fence, extending the Mustang lead to four. Judson would answer with three more in te top of the sixth, as two would come across on an RBI single from Arwood. The final run would come off the bat of McElvain, driving across Petersen on a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to two.
McElvain would earn the win, her first of the season, pitching five innings of work and allowing five runs, while striking out three. Webb would earn her second save of the day, pitching another two innings of no-hit ball. Haley Slaymaker was tabbed with the loss, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing six runs while striking out seven.
The Mustangs will head to warmer weather over the next couple of weeks, next competing on March 15, taking on Simpson of California in Tucson, Arizona.
