Eagles Sweep Mustangs in Doubleheader Showdown

PRESCOTT, Ariz. - Mount Mercy's softball team fell in both games of their doubleheader against Embry-Riddle on Monday afternoon. The Mustangs fell 8-0 in game one and 11-10 in game two.

GAME ONE

The Mustangs fell 8-0 to the Eagles in five innings in game one of the doubleheader.

With the first three innings scoreless, the Eagles put up the first run of the game with Leah Salas going long for a solo home run. Kealey Myhre reached on an error, allowing Autum Sulusi to score and extend the Eagles' lead to 2-0. An RBI single by Katie Jamieson and a two-run double by Anise Romo put the Eagles to a 5-0 lead over the Mustangs at the end of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles' Kealey Myhre hit the game-winning three-run homer to defeat the Mustangs 8-0. Mia Petersen recorded the only two hits for the Mustangs in game one, going a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate with a single in the first and fourth innings.

Mount Mercy's Alyssa McElvain claimed the loss for the first game of the doubleheader after 3.1 innings pitched, giving up six hits but striking out three Eagle batters. Vanessa Brink was the winning pitcher for the Eagles, pitching five innings while allowing two hits and striking out six Mustangs.

GAME TWO

The Mustangs saw their bats come alive in game two of the doubleheader but it was not enough to stop a walk-off Eagle home run in the 11-10 loss.

Mount Mercy's Ashley Webb put the Mustangs on the board with a two-run triple to right field. Raquel Trolliet brought in Webb with a sacrifice fly to put the Mustangs up 3-0 in the top half of the second inning.

The Eagles responded to the Mustangs' early lead with Anise Romo's single that put their first run up on the board. Following two singles that scored three Eagle runners, Leah Salas sent one long for a two-run homer to extend the Eagles' lead to 6-3 at the end of the second inning.

After the Eagles extended their lead to 7-3 in the fourth, Mount Mercy's Abbey Smith responded with a solo home run to cut the Eagles' lead to 7-4. Taking advantage of Eagle errors, the Mustangs plated two runs to cut the deficit to 7-6 heading into the bottom half.

The fifth inning remained scoreless, but the Mustangs had some hot bats in the top of the sixth inning. With back-to-back RBI triples, Kendra Mescher and Ashley Smith put the Mustangs ahead, with Petersen hitting a sacrifice fly to put the Mustangs up 9-7 going into the bottom of the sixth. The Eagles later scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, reclaiming their lead at 10-9.

In the seventh inning, Webb moved Sarah Heick around the bases with a single to center to tie the game at 10-10, but Myhre delivered the game-winning walk-off solo home run to lift the Eagles to an 11-10 win.

Mount Mercy's Webb took the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits over two innings. Claire Streeter was tabbed with the win, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing five hits while striking out eight Mustang batters.

Mount Mercy (7-9) will be back on the field on Tuesday, March 18, in Surprise, Ariz., to face Ottawa (AZ) for another doubleheader, with start times of 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. CDT.
