Mustangs Swept by Grand View in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Mount Mercy softball team was swept on the road, falling to Grand View 8-3 and 5-4.

Game One

The Mustangs held the lead early on, scoring three in the first inning alone. Calli Janik started the Mustangs scoring with an RBI single which scored Ashley Smith. Annika Headington followed that up with a two-run double to right field, scorign Janik and Abbey Smith, as the Mustangs held a three run lead until the fourth inning.

Olivia Harmon opened the scoring for Grand View on a single to center, scoring Gabriella Taber. The Vikings dealt most of their damage in the fifth, tallying four runs in the inning. Mackenzie Meister recorded a two-run double while Kylie Merical singled to right. Harmon capped off the inning with an RBI single, scoring Merical. In the sixth, Taber singled to right, while Merical drove in a run on a hit by pitch, and Chloe Kottlowski drove in a run on a ground out to close the scoring.

Molly Breeding earned the win, throwing 6.2 innings in relief while allowing nine hits and no runs. Alyssa McElvain was tabbed with the loss, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits.

Game Two

The Mustangs once again held an early lead in the game, once up 4-0 before allowing Grand View to get on the board. Headington drove in a run on a bases loaded walk, while Mia Peterson reached on an error by the Viking second baseman to drive in one. In the third, McElvain, now batting, would double to drive in Sarah Heick and Janik as the Mustangs held on to a four run lead.

In the third, the Vikings got on the board as Harmon grounded out to drive in a run, while Navaeh Randall homered in the fifth to get the Vikings to within one. In the seventh, Olivia Kyes tied the game on a double to right, while Kyes drove in the winning run on a double in the ninth to give the Vikings the doubleheader sweep.

Madi Huisman earned the win, throwing all nine innings and allowing 10 hits and four runs. Ashley Webb was tabbed with the loss, throwing 8.1 innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits.

The Mustangs will return to the diamond for another road matchup with Graceland in Lamoni on Sunday.
