Mustangs Sting Back to Defeat Fighting Bees
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Mount Mercy's softball team delivered a come-from-behind victory over Saint Ambrose on Wednesday night, edging the Fighting Bees 3-2. Due to approaching weather, game two of the series was canceled after three innings of play.
After a scoreless first inning, Saint Ambrose opened the scoring in the second as Taylor Martyn hit a single up the middle to drive in a run. In the fourth, Annika Headington answered with an RBI single to left field, plating the Mustangs' first run and tying the game at 1.
Entering the fifth, Becca Haag doubled to left center, bringing home Mady Reed to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth, Headington struck again with a single to left center, driving in the tying run. Lilly Wuethrich followed with an RBI single to left center to give the Mustangs a 3-2 advantage. The Mustangs held off the Bees in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
Alyssa McElvain earned the win, pitching a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits, and striking out six.
Cara Linnenkamp took the loss in relief, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing two runs on three hits. Leah Maro started the game for the Bees, tossing four innings, giving up one run on two hits, and recording three strikeouts.
Mount Mercy (23-20, 12-8 Heart) returns to Busse Field on Friday, April 25, to host William Penn on Senior Day. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
