CANTON, Mo. - The Mount Mercy softball team wrapped up its regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Culver-Stockton, winning 5-1 in game one and 2-0 in the nightcap on Saturday.
Game One
The Mustangs opened the twin bill with a 5-1 victory over the Wildcats. Mia Petersen went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Mustangs in the opener.
After holding the Mustangs scoreless in the top of the first, the Wildcats struck first as Kataleena Hunt singled up the middle to drive in a run. The Mustangs answered immediately in the second inning, plating two runs. Raquel Trolliet tied the game with an RBI single to left-center, followed by Lilly Wuethrich's RBI single to left that put the Mustangs ahead, 2-1.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Mustangs extended its lead in the fifth. Sarah Heick doubled to center to drive in a run, and Petersen capped the scoring with a two-run single to center. The Mustangs held the Wildcats scoreless the rest of the way to secure the game one win.
Maggie McNally earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on four hits over four innings. Ashley Webb tossed three shutout innings in relief, striking out two.
Penny Ruiz took the loss for the Wildcats, giving up five runs on 11 hits over six innings.
Game Two
The Mustangs completed the sweep with a 2-0 win in Game 2.
After three scoreless innings, the Mustangs broke through in the fourth. Kendra Mescher opened the scoring with an RBI single up the middle to drive in Heick. Trolliet followed with a single up the middle to plate Annika Headington and give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. The Mustang defense shut down the Wildcats in the later innings to seal their sweep.
Alyssa McElvain picked up the win, tossing five shutout innings and allowing just three hits while striking out two. Webb pitched two shutout innings in relief.
Sophie Stuart was charged with the loss for the Wildcats, surrendering two runs on four hits over 3.1 innings.
Mount Mercy (26-21, 15-9 HEART) will now prepare for the Heart of America Athletic Conference tournament, which begins Thursday, May 1. Additional tournament details will be announced soon.
