Mustangs top Wildcats in conference opener

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. -- Mount Mercy went on the road for its Heart of America Athletic Conference women's basketball opener on Tuesday, defeating Baker, 61-46.

The Mustangs outrebounded the Wildcats, 45-33, and held Baker to 32.2 percent field goal shooting en route to their second consecutive win. Mount Mercy improved to 2-4 and 1-0 in the Heart while Baker fell to 3-6 and 0-2 in league play.

The Mustangs got 56 of their 61 points from starters, led by Sammy Mia's 17 points. Sassy Coleman added 14 points, Kyla Richardson 13, and Madison Dreckman 12. Dreckman also had a game-high 15 rebounds. Mia grabbed eight boards, Coleman seven. Coleman also finished with three assists.

Baker did not have a double digit scorer. The Wildcats got eight points from Macey Frost and seven apiece from Ashley Griffin and Sophia Barrett. Griffin also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.

Up next for Mount Mercy is a non-conference road matchup with St. Francis (Ill.) on Sunday at 2:00 pm in Joliet, Ill. Heart of America action resumes on Wednesday, Dec. 1, when the Mustangs host Peru State at 5:30 pm at Hennessey Recreation Center.
