Mustangs drop final non-conference contest

DAVENPORT, Iowa - In their last game of 2022, the Mount Mercy women's basketball team dropped a non-conference matchup against St. Ambrose 62-55 inside Lee Lohman Arena on Thursday night. 

The Fighting Bees scored the first points of the game, but the Mustangs closed out the first quarter on a 10-4 run, holding St. Ambrose to single digits. Mount Mercy held their lead until the 4:52 mark in the second quarter, when St. Ambrose (9-4) tied it up at 19-19. Annika Headington sunk two free throws to give the Mustangs a two-point advantage at the half, 25-23. 

Just 26 seconds into the second half, the Fighting Bees leveled the game at 25 all. The third quarter featured six ties as neither team could pull away. St. Ambrose lead by double digits 58-47 with just under four minutes to play. A five-point swing from Tatum Griffin, brought the Mustangs within seven, but Mount Mercy ran out of time. 

Madison Dreckman posted a 14 and 11 double-double. Sammy Mia added 15 points, knocking down three 3-pointers. Griffin chipped in 10 points off the bench. St. Ambrose's Abby Wolter paced all players with 19 points. 

The Mustangs (7-6, 3-4 Heart) resume Heart of America Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 4 with a road contest against William Penn (4-8, 2-5 Heart) at 5:30 pm.
