Mia, Headington power Mustangs to home win
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Sammy Mia's game-high 29 points -- including the go-ahead bucket with 23 seconds remaining -- and Annika Headington's 14 points and 12 rebounds powered the Mount Mercy women's basketball team to a 62-60 victory over Culver-Stockton in Wednesday night's Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup at Hennessey Recreation Center.
The Mustangs (11-14, 7-12 Heart) won their second-straight at home and improved to 9-4 at Hennessey Rec Center this season. The Wildcats fell to 15-10 overall and 10-9 in conference play. Mount Mercy travels to Fayette, Mo., to take on second-ranked Central Methodist (24-0, 18-0 Heart) on Saturday.
The Mustangs started strong against the Wildcats, taking a 21-17 lead after the first quarter. The momentum shifted in the second period, which saw Culver-Stockton outscore Mount Mercy, 20-4, to take a 12-point lead into halftime. The Mustangs turned the tide after the break, winning the third quarter, 19-6, and held on late to avenge a 79-47 loss to the Wildcats on Jan. 14 in Canton, Mo.
Mia knocked down four 3-pointers and was 12-of-26 from the field overall. She also pulled down five rebounds and had two blocked shots. Headington was a force as well, notching her third double-double of the season while finishing with five assists. Karlie Krogman chipped in five boards and two blocks off the bench.
McKenzie Lathrom was the lone Wildcat in double figures with 23 points to go along with eight rebounds. Katie Webb tallied nine points and five boards while Aaliyah Ortiz, Nevaiah Bell-Tenner, and Whynter Waterhouse-Brennan had eight points apiece.
